3 Reasons Why You Should Not Choose Epoxy

You will see many contractors use epoxy for garage floor coatings due to their lower price point, ease of installation, and overall homeowner popularity. Unfortunately, they lack the long-term durability that our customers expect. We will list out the 3 main reasons (there are many benefits to choosing polyaspartic over epoxy) why you should think twice before choosing an epoxy based garage floor coating.

1. Adhesion

Arguably, the most important factor when it comes to a garage floor coating is how strong the bond will be to the underlying concrete. While it does depend on the product and how you coat the floor, epoxy is thicker than polyaspartic and therefore cannot attach itself to the small pores in the underlying concrete. Polyaspartic, on the other hand, is much thinner and can lock itself into every crevice. This results in a bond so strong that your concrete will fail before the coating comes up. 2. Durability

There is no disagreement that polyaspartic is a lot more durable than epoxy when it comes to impact, heat, and abrasion resistance. Every professional garage flooring contractor will use a polyaspartic sealer as a top coat (and if they don’t, look elsewhere) as it provides a strong wear layer to protect the epoxy beneath. Unfortunately, the instance the top layer is damaged, the epoxy coating underneath will likely be damaged to the point of being visually unappealing. We believe that the floor should last a lifetime, and the added protection of a full polyaspartic floor is well worth the investment.

3. UV Protection

Homeowners don’t think about how the coating will look like in a year, 5 years, or even 10 years down the road. Epoxy does not carry any UV resistance and will yellow in a very short amount of time when exposed to direct sunlight. All garages get some sort of sunlight, especially when they contain windows. Some companies add a UV resistant additive to help with this shortcoming, but those products tend to lessen the epoxy’s strength and does not protect it forever. Once yellowed, epoxy floors will need to be recoated. On the other hand, polyaspartic coatings are 100% UV stable. This means that regardless of the amount of UV exposure, the coating will not fade or yellow.
